First of all, SEM/SEO/SMM is not something that just happens when you launch a website and complete a few online profiles. And search engine optimization (SEO) does not naturally occur the older your website or social profile gets. The most basic definitions of search engine marketing, optimization and social media marketing are as follows:
Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
A form of marketing that involves the promotion of websites and other web properties by increasing their visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization and advertising.
Social Media Marketing (SMM)
Social Media is a catch-all phrase describing websites and applications that encourage various forms of social activity. Social media marketing is process of improving branding and gaining traffic through participation in these websites and applications.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The process of affecting the visibility of a website, social profile, or other web property so that it appears high(er) on the search engine result page (SERP) – i.e. the list of results returned by a search engine.
To realize a lasting and fruitful online presence, serious consideration should be given to all three areas of online marketing and how they apply to your business.
Always keep in mind that building and executing a solid web marketing and SEO strategy takes time and patience. Sure, there are fast ways to the top of search results, but, be warned, search engine penalties for unsavory shortcuts can be brutal – up to, virtual, removal from search result pages all together.
Do online marketing and SEO right and your web properties will produce desirable results for years to come!
